Write Here: Sanctuary Showcase
April 29 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The ‘Write Here: Sanctuary’ Showcase is a celebration of creative expression, giving new writers from some of the UK’s most marginalised communities the opportunity to perform on stage for the first time. Over the last six months, the ‘Write Here: Sanctuary’ project has worked with three groups of refugees, asylum seekers and new arrivals from across the East Midlands, facilitating creative writing workshops and encouraging participants to share their experiences through poetry, prose and creative non-fiction.
And now, the groups would like to share the finished work with you.
Writing East Midlands, in conjunction with Cities of Sanctuary, and the University of Nottingham, are proud to present this afternoon of spoken word, featuring performances from participants from the Derby, Leicester and Nottingham ‘Write Here: Sanctuary’ groups.
The performances – which include work written by participants from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and East Asia – will touch on the themes of family, identity, nationality, belonging and belief, and the work is by turns inspiring, insightful, humorous and heartbreaking.
The ‘Write Here: Sanctuary’ Showcase is part of the Nottingham Poetry Festival, and takes place on Saturday 29th April at the Nottingham Writers’ Studio. The show begins at 12noon and refreshments will be available. Entry is free, and all ages are welcome to attend, although please be aware that the performances may include some adult themes.
