The Play’s the Thing Part One: Writing for Performance with Gareth Morgan
April 22 @ 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners to playwriting. If you are working at a more intermediate level please see Part II of this series here.
A Guide to Writing for Performance
Here participants will explore the differences and particularities for writing for the stage, rather than writing for the page. Focussing on the two areas of developing your initial idea & building characters, we’ll examine character, time and place as key ingredients in the recipe of a play and how this collides to make the world of the play and its story. Using ideas around structure, practical exercises, and discussion of pop culture texts (Jaws & Star Wars will both be used so a working knowledge of these is useful) as examples, the session aims to put tools in the creative toolbox of the aspiring playwright to help get started on that daunting first draft!
Attendees may also want to sign-up to Part II of this series details here.
Both sessions will end with a practical advice/Q&A session and a few pitfalls and heffalump traps to avoid.
Gareth is an Associate Artist at Nottingham Playhouse working on script and literary projects and a freelance dramaturg and writer. As a playwright, he has written for Nottingham Playhouse and Nottingham Forest FC, the SEAS International Festival, the Bike Shed Theatre and Exeter Northcott. He also runs Act 2, an East Midlands new theatre writing project, based at Nottingham Playhouse, and was nominated for the national dramaturgy award, The Kenneth Tynan, in 2016.
As part of these workshops, Gareth will be able to inform you about opportunities for critiques and live readings with actors through the Playhouse and Act 2.
