Food Writing Day with Lottie Huckle
October 28 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
10am-1pm: Food writing in fiction workshop
Food can be a truly transformative tool in literature. It has the ability to code relationships, act as a gateway to new worlds and add authenticity to a piece of writing. In this session we’ll examine a range of fictional food writing from some of our favourite pieces of formative literature through to critically acclaimed texts. We’ll explore these texts together and assess how and why they are model examples of food writing.
This workshop will be interspersed with creative writing exercises and the opportunity to share your work and receive constructive comments and advice from your fellow workshop members and myself.
2-5pm: Non-fiction workshop
Leading on from the morning workshop on food writing in fiction, we’ll turn our creative efforts to non-fiction food writing.* Starting with narrative non-fiction, we’ll look at how food can be instrumental in non-fiction genres including travel and memoir. This part of the workshop will include creative writing exercises drawing on your experiences of food. There will be the opportunity to share your work with the group and receive helpful feedback.
In the second part of this workshop we will workshop specific elements of non-fiction food writing including starting a food blog and where to start with writing your cookbook. If you have a cookbook proposal you’re working on, please do bring it along to work on in the session.
Lottie Huckle is a creative writer interested in food and travel writing and spoken word poetry.
