For me, one of the most important achievements of Nottingham Writers Studio has come through bringing writers together at our evening socials on the first Thursday of the month. They usually begin with a talk from a guest speaker or studio member, followed by the opportunity to catch up with other members, share experiences, celebrate triumphs and offer support when the going gets tough.
It’s a great way to keep in touch with the writing world beyond our desks, but it’s tricky to get to evening socials if you live outside of Nottingham or have other commitments- so last month, we started ‘Creative Brews’, a Thursday morning/ lunchtime drop in session. Rather than uncork the wine, we put the coffee on, but the principle is still the same (with a bit of working thrown in here and there) – a space and time where writers can meet, discuss and share.
It’s another way for studio members to keep in touch and up to date with what’s going on at the studio, and our first session was a great way to remind all of us that even though it’s down to us to make our writing happen, we’re not alone.
From this week onwards, we’re setting Thursdays as a ‘drop-in’ time at the studio – you may meet just a couple of other members, you may find it’s standing room only, but it’s your space and your time to be a writer in good company – we hope you make the most of it when you can.
