After three years on the Board I will be stepping down as Chair at the March AGM. It was an incredibly difficult decision to make as I love the Studio and Nottingham is on the cusp of transforming into a highly respected creative city at the moment due to the UNESCO bid, the establishment of the Festival of Words and investment from the Creative Quarter. But this is a members-led Studio and I believe it is imperative that there is a regular rotation of the Board so that we are able to address the needs of our diverse and expanding membership.
There are now three spaces waiting to be filled and this is an opportunity for you to help shape our future. The Studio has changed dramatically over the last two years, primarily because we have moved from a small to a large space and because of the increase in membership. Although this means we have inevitably lost the intimacy of the earlier days we now have a larger space to showcase events, build partnerships and have a meaningful visual presence in the heart of the city. With City Arts moving next door and exciting plans being drawn up for the renovation of Sneinton Market there is great scope for collaboration which in turn means improving opportunities to make a living as a writer.
Each member of the Board has a specific role to play, although this is not compulsory. This is partly to support our Development Director Pip and because there is simply more to do as we get bigger. You may have a specific skill that you could bring to the Board, such as: helping with marketing; managing our social media or website; funding experience; awareness of codes and practices; Perhaps you are a writer of a particular genre or medium and feel that your specialism is under-represented? If so, have a voice and get involved.
We have a fantastic Board at the moment. It has been a privilege to work alongside them and I have learned so much it’s been like getting a free MA in writing and business. And one of them can put up curtain rails as well! But now we need three more people. If you are considering becoming a Board member and would like to know more then I’m happy to meet up for a cuppa and chat.
