I have just volunteered, along with fellow Board member Eleanor Hemsley, to coordinate the evening socials at the Studio – for the next year anyway, when it might be time for someone else to have a go!
I see this as a real privilege which I am excited about. The Studio is growing fast in terms of the number of members and this makes it increasingly difficult for Pippa, or anyone else, to know everyone personally. We are a scattered community of writers, working in a wide variety of organisations and living very different lives – but as a recent quick poll in our Facebook group indicated, most of us share a desire for community and support. There are many ways of doing that and the socials are just one ingredient but it’s really exciting that by bringing people together all manner of magic may occur – creative collaborations, the encouragement and feedback needed to nudge a book or project to the next stage, ideas and plans for raising cash and profiles, and, of course, friendship and connection.
We intend that the socials will continue to happen on the 6th of the month, unless it falls on a Bank Holiday in which case it might move to a nearby date. This gives us much needed variety with regard to the day of the week and hopefully means that most people will be able to attend at least some of the socials. They start at 7.30pm unless otherwise indicated. You are encouraged to bring a bottle and nibbles to share – and we all need to muck in with the washing up.
We intend that the socials will have a focus – usually a speaker – for an hour or so, and the rest will be, well, social. Given that most of us are avid readers too, we will keep a table aside for give and take of books too – bring along any that you’ve enjoyed and finished with and who knows what conversations this might start as you pass them to other people to take home?
Suggestions and feedback as we go along will be valuable, so do let us know what you think.
The socials are open and free to all members of the Studio. Members can bring a guest up for a fee of £5. Prospective members can come to one social for free before they join.
