The Studio premises at 25 Hockley were redeveloped by NWS in 2014, in collaboration with Rob Smith of the Howie Smith Project, to provide tailor-made space for Studio members and activities.
On the ground floor, there is a common writing area with desks for quiet writing, comfy chairs for meeting with other writers and discussing or critiquing each others’ work, and a ‘library corner’. There are also offices which can be rented on a monthly basis for use by writers or other creative professionals.
A purpose-built disabled-access-compliant ramp leads downstairs to our basement performance area and events space. This brick-lined space seats an audience of up to 60 people comfortably, or can be laid out with cabaret-style seating for a more intimate event. On a day-to-day basis, the space is available for members to use if they want to hide away and write, or meet with each other away from the common writing area upstairs.
The basement also has a meeting room which will seat up to 15 around a large table and can be used for meetings or workshop events. A basic kitchen provides coffee/tea making facilities.
NWS members have 24-hour access to the Studio and its facilities. Some of the spaces can be booked (by members or external organisations) – these bookings can be checked on the room bookings calendar in the members’ area of our website. There will always be space for members to write.
Wifi is available throughout the building – login details are displayed.
A laptop is available for members’ use.
Printing. A black and white printer is connected to the members’ laptop. Printing is free for up to 15 sheets a month. If you are printing more than this, please pay 5p a sheet for additional pages. There is a ‘Money for Printing’ box next to the printer for contributions.
Storage. If you’d like to store any belongings (e.g. books, paper) at NWS, boxes are available for £5 a month. Any items stored at NWS are at your own risk.
Caring for the space
Groups and individuals using the space are asked to help keep it in a good condition for other members. Please wash up, dry up, and put away any crockery or cutlery you use. Cleaning materials are kept in the kitchen.
